Are you suffering from toothache?

Toothache - A painful condition

Tooth pain can be caused by a wide number of different dental issues, and the pain you are experiencing could be caused by problems related to the jaw or gums as well as the teeth themselves.

You may only notice mild discomfort to start with (perhaps while consuming food or drink) and this can often come and go. If left untreated the condition is likely to get progressively worse, resulting in more severe, constant pain.

Same-day relief from toothache

The emergency dentist’s first step will be to discuss the pain you are experiencing with you, before carefully examining your mouth. They may also suggest an x-ray of your teeth to help pinpoint the issue. Depending on the diagnosis, your dentist will then recommend the best course of action and the talk you through the options available to relieve your pain.

If your toothache has been caused by decay, or by damage to a filling, your emergency dentist will carefully prepare the area and repair the tooth with a new filling.

If the dental pulp inside your tooth has become infected, you may require root canal treatment. If this is the case, your emergency dentist will gently remove the affected soft tissue within the tooth and replace it with a special material before sealing it.

We understand that some patients are very nervous about emergency dental treatment. Our aim is to make sure your visit is as relaxing and pain-free as possible. Whichever treatment is necessary, your emergency dentist will use the latest anaesthetic techniques to ensure you only experience the minimum amount of discomfort.

Causes of toothache

The dental pulp inside your tooth is a delicate web of nerves and blood vessels. If this pulp becomes inflamed, it can cause tooth pain. The main causes of this type of inflammation are:

Other possible causes of tooth pain (not related to inflammation of the dental pulp) are:

Toothache FAQs

Is my toothache an emergency?

Although mild toothache is not uncommon, it could be a sign of developing problems, and you should always get it checked out by your dentist. If your tooth pain has lasted for more than 1-2 days, or is causing considerable discomfort, we recommend making an appointment with our emergency dentist.

Why is my toothache so painful?

Tooth pain is often caused by infections in the pulp inside your tooth. As well as blood vessels and tissues, this pulp contains some of the most sensitive nerves in your body. This super sensitivity means that tooth pain can often be severe and debilitating.

Can I treat toothache at home?

There are some home remedies available that may give temporary relief from toothache. These include salt water rinses, standard pain medication, and herbal remedies. However, it is important to remember that most toothache is a sign that something is wrong. Your pain may develop further so make sure you visit a dentist as soon as possible.

How can I stop toothache from reoccurring?

Following your emergency dental treatment, it is important to maintain a good oral hygiene routine. Make sure you brush your teeth regularly, use dental floss as advised, and attend regular dental hygiene appointments for cleaning and advice.
