Dental emergencies

If your teeth, gums or mouth are causing you excessive concern or discomfort, we recommend you seek the advice of an emergency dentist as soon as possible. Whilst you may be able to temporarily control pain, ignoring a problem now might lead to more significant, long-term issues in the future. Our emergency dental experts will be able to alleviate your pain and address your concerns

Conditions you are likely to need an emergency dentist for

Gum Infections

If you have a gum infection you are probably already noticing a significant, negative impact on your daily life. You may feel you can manage this in the short-term, but it is important to remember that ignoring gum infections can lead to wider health issues as well as dental problems. If you suspect an abscess or infection you should visit a dentist as soon as possible.

Lost fillings

Fillings can sometimes become loose and fall out. Whilst this in itself does not always constitute a dental emergency, there may be underlying causes that require urgent treatment. If you are experiencing a high level of pain from a missing filling, or if there is evidence of severe damage or decay, we recommend you make an emergency dental appointment as soon as possible.

Severe tooth decay

Regular visits to the dentist can help prevent tooth decay. If a cavity is left untreated it can go on cause infection and decay, significantly damaging and weakening the tooth. If this has happened with one of your teeth it is essential that you visit the dentist to remedy the situation.

Problems following a tooth extraction

If you are experiencing pain or delayed healing following a tooth extraction, you may require further treatment. While you can expect some swelling and pain directly after your procedure, this should be manageable and eventually subside.

If pain persists longer than three days or is too severe to tolerate, it could be a sign of an underlying problem that needs professional assessment. If you have any concerns, we recommend you visit the emergency dentist straight away.

Root canal treatment

Tooth pain can often be caused by the increasing impact of a bacterial infection within the internal soft tissue. Left untreated, this level of infection can sometimes damage a tooth so badly that it requires extraction. This can be prevented with root canal treatment, where the damaged pulp is removed and replaced with gutta percha (an effective alternative filling material) before being sealed.

If the level of pain you are experiencing is severe, then this procedure can be carried out during an emergency dental appointment. After treatment, you will feel relief from your pain almost immediately.

Loose crowns or bridges

Dental crowns and bridges can become damaged or loosened through accidental impact or where there is decay to the supporting teeth. Because both of these underlying causes can allow infection to develop, it is important to get the area checked out as soon as possible.

Once your emergency dentist has examined your mouth, they may be able to repair your bridge or crown. If this is not possible, they will protect the area with a temporary solution whilst a new permanent bridge or crown is prepared.

Broken braces or dentures

Like natural teeth, dental devices such as braces or dentures can become damaged as a result of accidental impact. As well as damage to the device itself, it may also cause related issues such as scratches to your cheeks, gums or tongue.

The emergency dentist will be able to attend to any damage to your mouth. They will also mend the appliance if they can, though some repairs may require the support of a specialist laboratory.
